The crown jewel of Forsyth Park is the cast-iron fountain, which was made famous by its appearance in the film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Outdoor enthusiasts love Skidaway Island State Park, a 588-acre park filled with palm trees, Spanish moss and local wildlife. Visit the park to get a glimpse of deer, egrets and raccoons enjoying their natural habitat. Skidaway Island State Park is also a popular destination for bird watchers. Tricentennial Park is home to several historical sites, all of which capture the charm of Savannah. If you plan historic Savannah vacations with kids, take them to the Savannah Children’s Museum for hours of hands-on entertainment.
Savannah Historical Sites
Our downtown Savannah rentals are also located close to some of the city’s major historical sites. Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace honors the achievements of the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. The site was the first National Historic Landmark designated in Savannah. First African Baptist Church served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, making it one of the most important historical buildings in the city. Stay in one of our Savannah vacation rentals if you want easy access to Pin Point Heritage Museum, Massie Heritage Center, Wormsloe Plantation Historic Site and Colonial Park Cemetery.
Museums in Savannah
Staying in our Savannah vacation rentals makes it easy to visit the many museums located in and around Savannah. The Savannah History Museum contains thousands of artifacts, all of which document the important role Savannah played in events such as the Civil War and American Revolution. Telfair Academy is an excellent example of the historic architecture found throughout Savannah. The building was designed by William Jay, a man known for his Colonial-style designs. Telfair Academy has a vast collection of paintings from North America and Europe, making it a favorite destination for art enthusiasts who take historic Savannah vacations each year. If you prefer modern art, set aside time for a visit to the Jepson Center. The museum is home to works by Frank Stella, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns and other contemporary artists. If you are traveling with children, stop by the museum’s interactive gallery, which has hands-on exhibits for children of all ages. Savannah College of Art and Design is one of the most notable art colleges in the country. The college has an on-site museum filled with paintings, photographs and other works of art. SCAD Museum of Art is housed in a modern building, but some of the materials inside are from as far back as the Antebellum Period.
