Savannah, Georgia is a picturesque city on the river overflowing with historic landmarks, enlightening museums, eclectic shopping and a colorful food scene. Most visitors start exploring the city in the Historic District, which is also where most of our properties are located. At the center of this district, both literally and figuratively, is the expansive 30 acre green space of Forsyth Park. This park is popular with both locals and visitors and it’s easy to see why with all the walking trails, places to sit in the shade and room to enjoy people watching or a nice picnic. There’s a Farmer’s Market here every Saturday and numerous events and open-air concerts take place here as well.
Savannah’s Historic District is one of the largest and most well-preserved of its kind in the country. Just walking through the district will allow you to see great examples of historic architecture like Gothic, Victorian and Greek Revival among others. You can find the main area of the district between the following four locations:
– Savannah River
– East Broad Street
– Gwinnett Street
– Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
One of the best ways to tour the Historic District is to embark on a tour. The Old Town Trolley Tour is endlessly popular, but you can also take a horse and buggy tour, ghost tour or pub crawl.
The Savannah Waterfront area is another must-visit location in the city. Mainly located along the Savannah River on River Street, this interesting concourse also houses over 80,000 square feet of warehouse space. These old cotton warehouses now hold over 70 business, including restaurants, shopping, art galleries and more. From River Street, you can also head out on a riverboat cruise, harbor cruise or go on a dolphin watching excursion.
If you have time to branch out into the nearby areas while on your trip, then you might consider the quick 30 minute drive out to Tybee Island. Barely three square miles, the island serves up surf and sand with both fresh water and salt water beaches. Take a tour out on the coast to watch dolphins or fish. Visit the Tybee Lighthouse on the north end of the island, or simply spend some time wandering the neighborhoods and enjoying restaurants on the beach. It’s an easy place to just relax, but you can also get more involved through water sports, fishing, or even taking a beach or marsh trek through the Tybee Marine Science Center.
