Savannah is proud of its reputation as the Hostess City of the South. The charm and distinctive southern graciousness that is uniquely Georgia is evident in the way the locals embrace the presence of visitors. A fine collection of historic homes that have been lovingly restored and repurposed as guest accommodations provides local and international visitors with the chance to experience Savannah as a historic and cultural center. The sprawling Bird Baldwin estate is one such property. This popular Savannah vacation rental features four separate one-bedroom units, including the Bird Baldwin Parlor. Each unit is independent of the other condominiums, and you have the option of reserving more than one unit, depending on availability.
A Bit of History and the Bird Baldwin Parlor
Bird Baldwin Parlor is part of the 1838 construction phase of the Bird Baldwin property. It is located on the second level of the historic home. It is fittingly referred to as the Bird Baldwin Parlor due to its location on an upper or parlor level of the property. The 1838 phase was the first completed part of this Lewis Bird property, and subsequent additions were finished about two decades later. According to local lore confirmed by archived records, the Bird family never got a chance to live in this house as they perished in a fire while on vacation on the steamboat Pulaski. Mr. Bird’s mother directed the completion of the project and later sold the property to Mr. Bird’s law partner, Mr. Baldwin. The Baldwins used the house as a private residence for a number of years.
The Bird Baldwin property was commandeered by General Sherman and his troops in 1864, and the estate has undergone different iterations, including as a rooming house, a bar called “Harry’s” and as an unauthorized haven for homeless individuals who almost burned the place down.
